Course Overview
This course covers the human resources responsibilities of project managers, the types of power associated with project management, and the advantages and disadvantages of project organization types. This course also includes information about the fundamentals of organizational planning, the steps to follow when creating a project team, as well as the questions you should answer prior to staffing a project. In addition, this program provides instruction on conducting a staff acquisition negotiation, the characteristics to look for in potential team members, and how to recognize and avoid personnel problems. Finally, students will learn how to create a team environment conducive to quality performance, how to overcome barriers to effective project team development, and how to use motivational theories to assess their own human resource techniques.

Objectives
Unit 1: Fundamentals of Project Managers 0.5 - 1 hour
• Identify the characteristics of a good project manager.
• Differentiate between a functional manager and a project manager.
• Define five types of power used by a project manager.
• Identify the forms of project organization.
• Simulation Overview: In this simulation, you will meet with Dana Sanchez, Human Resources Executive at Icon International. You have just been appointed project manager on a temporary contract and will be working on both internal and external projects. Dana wants to ensure that you are clear about how your role, power, and responsibilities will change depending on the organizational structure of each project.
Unit 2: Project Organizational Planning 0.5 - 1 hour
• Sequence the steps for creating a project team.
• Identify the factors to consider during organizational planning.
• Identify steps to achieve effective communication.
• Identify actions taken in organizational planning.
• Identify the information learned in a stakeholder analysis report.
• Simulation Overview: You have just been appointed as project manager at Icon International. You are about to begin organizational planning for an important project to launch a new style of sportswear. Although you have previously worked as project manager, you are anxious to make a good impression on your first project with Icon. Jack Evans, Senior Project Manager at Icon, has offered to go over some of the main issues involved in project organizational planning.
Unit 3: Staff Acquisition 0.5 - 1 hour
• Identify steps to successfully negotiate staff acquisition.
• Identify desirable characteristics for team members.
• Identify categories of personnel problems.
• Simulation Overview: In this simulation, you will meet with Jack Evans, Senior Project Manager at Icon International. You are a project manager and have just been assigned to a project aimed at opening a new retail store. This is a relatively large-scale project and you want to ensure that the right people are on board. Jack has extensive experience of staff acquisition and, after hearing your concerns, has requested a meeting with you to reinforce your awareness of the issues involved.
Unit 4: Team Building 0.5 - 1 hour
• Identify the factors that are vital to team development.
• Identify the ways stakeholder reviews are useful to team development.
• Sequence the steps of the team development process.
• Identify the barriers to effective team development.
• Identify the three motivational theories that affect human resource management.
• Simulation Overview: In this simulation, you will meet with Kyle Saunders, Human Resources Specialist at Icon International. As a response to low morale among employees, Icon has been running training workshops to help managers motivate team members. You have just completed one such workshop and are determined to use the information you have learned. To help reinforce your knowledge, you have asked Kyle to check that you have fully understood the various concepts.
